Child Support- Legal Issues

The Civil Division of the Stearns County Attorney's Office serves as legal counsel for the Human Services on cases filed in Stearns County District Court and provides a variety of services to ensure that a child receives support.

These services include:

  • Obtaining court orders for child support, child care and medical support
  • Obtaining court orders legally naming the father of children born outside of marriage
  • Locating non-custodial parents
  • Collecting current and/or past support payments
  • Enforcing child support orders
  • Obtaining court orders modifying child support orders

If you have questions or concerns about a child support matter you may contact Stearns County Human Services - Administrative Services Division at 320.656.6205.

Services NOT provided

The Stearns County Attorney's Office is not authorized by statute to provide the following services:

  • Legal advice to either party
  • Legal representation to either party
  • Divorce Action
  • Legal actions for visitation/parenting time or custody
  • Establishment of spousal maintenance only
  • Enforcement of court-ordered payment of unpaid bills
  • Attorney fees
  • Property settlement
  • Any other items not related to support payments

You may wish to contact a private attorney if you need any of these services. Please be aware that child support issues are entirely independent from custody and visitation/parenting time issues.
