Simple Steps to Cut Waste
Reduce
Reduction actually prevents waste from being created in the first place. Therefore, it is the most preferable method of waste management.
- Bring your own coffee cup to work, instead of using paper or plastic cups
- Use electronic mail to send memos, rather than making paper copies
- Bring your lunch in reusable containers, instead of generating trash
- Use rechargeable batteries
- Choose products with the least amount of packaging
- Cut down on the junk mail delivered to your home
Re-use
Avoid putting items in the garbage. Repair and re-use them, donate items to charity, or sell them. Many everyday household goods have more than one life or use.
- Re-use paper and plastic bags
- Save and re-use gift boxes, ribbon and wrapping paper for gifts
- Share newspapers and magazines with friends
Recycle
Recycling uses waste to make new products. However, setting products out on the curb to be recycled is only part of the process. Close the loop and buy products that are made from recycled materials.
- Purchase products made of materials that can be recycled
- Recycle car batteries, tires, oil, glass, cans, newspaper, plastic and cardboard, etc.
- Call (320) 255-6140 for recycling and disposal options in your area
So, be creative! Look for opportunities to reduce, reuse and recycle. The next time you take out the trash, think of how you and your family can reduce the amount of garbage you generate.
Reducing Your Junk Mail
Americans throw away more than 500,000 tons of unopened bulk junk mail each year. Everyday, people receive unsolicited mail known as “junk mail.” Your address is entered on a mailing list each time you make a donation, enter a contest, send in a subscription or warranty card, or buy something on credit or with a check.
The nation’s major consumer credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian, Innovis and Trans Union -- have established a toll-free number (1-888-567-8688) to get off lists for pre-approved credit card offers. The recording will ask for your social security number, full name, address and telephone number.
Households can significantly reduce their advertising mail by registering with the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service. Write the company and request that you want to reduce waste that you receive from direct mailers and want your name placed in the delete file. The address is:
