The type of business activity determines which government entity might license or regulate it.
If the business involves bar or restaurant activities and is located in Stearns County, contact either Environmental Services at 320.656.3613 (food) or the Auditor's Office at 320.656.3900 (liquor).
If the business does not involve either, in most instances no County licensure is required.
Stearns County does require licenses for auctioneers and permits for fireworks and gambling .
Stearns County also requires a license for Transient Merchants (door-to-door sales and business sales held at a specific location). For information relative to this type of licensure, contact the Auditor's Office at 320.656.3900.
If the business or proposed business is/will be located within the limits of a city , that city should be contacted to determine whether they require any type of licensure. Within the limits of the City of St. Cloud , contact the City Clerk at 320.255.7210. While St. Cloud does not require a general business license, the city does regulate certain activities that do require licensure. Again, it depends on the type of business activity.
The State of Minnesota does require licensure for many business activities. To check with the State regarding licensure for a business, contact the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development at www.state.mn.us or call 1.800-657.3858.
