Stearns County has a five-member Board of Commissioners. The Board of Commissioners is the policy-making body; adopting rules and policies, setting a budget and levy, approving a capital improvement plan, making land-use decisions and ensuring citizen concerns are met.

Boards and committees in this category either address a broad range of issues County-wide or have a scope of focus that crosses departmental lines.
These boards and committees work with environmental issues, such as animal feedlots and other agricultural concerns, wetlands, shoreland, and more.
This group of boards and committees addresses programs and service areas for the health and welfare of children, adults and families. The focus of these boards and committees includes such diverse topics as child welfare, chemical dependency, emergency medical services and mental health.
Some boards and committees are part of a wider network, serving regional or statewide needs. The Great River Regional Library Board, with representation from six central Minnesota counties, is one example.
These boards and committees advise and support programs for the safety of Stearns County citizens. Law enforcement, prosecution and criminal justice, as well as emergency and disaster response, are the focus here.
Boards and committees in this area are concerned with transportation planning, land platting and development, property valuation and the like.
The Park Commission functions to advise the Board of Commissioners on matters relating to county parks, trails and open space needs.
