Passport Books/Cards

U.S. Passport Book

  • Valid for travel by air, sea or land.
  • For applicants 16 years of age and over passport books are valid for 10 years. For applicants 15 years of age and under passport books are valid for 5 years.
  • 5" X 3 1/2" book when unopened.

U.S. Passport Card

  • Not for travel by air. Valid for land and sea crossings between the US and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean only.
  • For applicants 16 years of age and over passport cards are valid for 10 years. For applicants 15 years of age and under passport cards are valid for 5 years.
  • Wallet size

Note: An applicant may have both a passport book and a passport card.

First time applicants for passport books/cards must appear in person before a Passport Agent. If applying for a minor child under the age of 16, the child must appear with both parents (per the Two-Parent Consent Federal Law) accompanying him/her to sign the application. both parents will need an acceptable form of ID to prove their identity and the child applicant will need the items listed below for applying for a passport book or card.

The applicant will need:

1. A completed application for a U.S. Passport (DS-11)

  • Print the completed form using black ink on one-sided pages.

2. Present proof of U.S. Citizenship (One of these.)

  • Previous U.S. Passport (Applicants 15 yrs and younger must present birth certificate in addition to previous passport)
  • Certified copy of your birth certificate. Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  • Original Naturalization Certificate
  • Certificate of Citizenship

3. Proof of Identity (One of these.)

  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Current, valid driver's license
  • Government ID: City, State or Federal
  • Military ID: Military and dependents
  • Other ID's may be used with discretion

4. One Passport Photograph

  • One 2X2 photo taken on a light or white background. Our office takes passport photos for an additional $17.00 fee.

5. Two separate forms of payment.

  • The passport fee and any expedite fee must be in the form of a check or money order.
  • The execution fee and the passport photo fees may be cash, check, money orders, Mastercard, or Discover

Please Note: If purchasing a birth certificate or updating or renewing your drivers license as well, you will need to have separate payment for those transactions.

6. Time it takes to receive your passport.

  • Routine passports are taking approximately 4-6 weeks.
  • Paying an additional expedite fee of $60.00 may get you your passport in approximately 7-10 days. Please note: Additional Express Mail fees may apply.
  • We encourage all passport applicants to apply early to ensure the receiving of their passport on time for their departure. Passport processing times may vary. Generally, it will take the times listed above to receive your passport.

Passport Fees

Two separate types of payment are required to apply for a passport.

Payment 1: The Passport Fee and any Expedite Fee must be in the form of a check or money order , made payable to "Department of State."

Payment 2: The Execution Fee and Passport Photo Fee may be paid with cash, check, money order, Mastercard, or Discover made payable to "Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer."

Please note: Express Mail fees may apply in addition to the above prices.

There is only one execution fee for a combo (passport book and passport card).

Passport Photos

One 2" x 2" photo is required in order to obtain a passport. Same day photos are available in the office.

Fee: $17.00 including tax.
