Floodplain Mapping
Use the interactive Floodplain Mapping Application
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been working to update the flood plain mapping for Stearns County. These maps provide more accurate and up-to-date flood hazard information, depicting areas most at-risk for flooding. These maps influence decisions on floodplain policy, new building permits and development, and flood insurance.
Note to property owners:
- Land that was never located in the floodplain before may now be in the flood hazard areas.
- Property that was once in the floodplain may no longer be designated as such.
That’s why it’s important for people to check out the maps. Home and business owners who are located in floodplains may want to purchase flood insurance and take other precautions to reduce their risk of loss. On the other hand, those who are now located outside the floodplain area won’t want to pay for flood insurance that they don’t need.
Changes to Ordinance 439: Land Use and Zoning Ordinance
The Stearns County Board of Commissioners recently adopted changes to County Ordinance 439 (Ordinance 439 Appendices) that will become effective on December 6th, 2011. For insurance purposes the maps will not be effective until February 12, 2012.
