Descriptive Narrative:
Quarry Thirteen is a long and narrow quarry bounded on the northwest and southeast by wide and continuous basalt dikes. These are the largest dikes in the park and probably also in central Minnesota. The basalt is surrounded by extensive natural outcrops of red granite which display shear zones; red granite was most likely dominant within the quarry itself. Excellent examples of glacial polish are found in the eastern part of the quarry.
This is a medium-sized quarry with a maximum depth of 39 feet. There are deep holes at each end separated by a shallow area of submerged spoils blocks. Several vehicles are underwater in the northeast hole. Fish are commonly observed. A youth drowned in this quarry in the 1980's.
