Descriptive Narrative:
The group of quarries along the southern park margin begins with Quarry Five. As with other quarries in this group, gray granite is generally as important as red granite. An extensive area of gray granite is located south of this quarry and it may also be present in the lower part of the high walls. A basalt dike at the north end cuts both red and gray granite.
Quarry Five is one of the smallest quarries in the park and is the most shallow with a maximum depth of 11 feet. Between May and July, 1994, the water level in this quarry rose; it was one of the few quarries to show this pattern. The quarry is part of an area of hydrogeologic anomalies located in the southeastern part of the park.
